Sexual Assault ACTION Month
April is Sexual Assault ACTION Month at WEAVE—a time to raise awareness, educate our community, and take meaningful steps toward ending sexual violence. At WEAVE, we believe that awareness alone is not enough; real change happens when we take action. Whether it’s supporting survivors, advocating for policy change, or sharing resources, every action counts. Below, you’ll find important information about sexual assault, along with downloadable resources to help you learn, share, and take part in creating a safer, more supportive community.
Sexual Assault
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, sexual assault is any type of sexual contact or behavior that occurs without the explicit consent of the recipient. Falling under the definition of sexual assault are sexual activities such as forced sexual intercourse, forcible sodomy, child molestation, incest, fondling, and attempted rape.
Facts about Sexual Assault:
- 17.7 million American women have been victims of an attempted or completed rape
- Only 36% of all rape victims ever report the crime to the police.
- Every 107 seconds, another American is sexually assaulted
- 1 in 2 women have experienced sexual violence victimization at some points in their lives.
- 1 in 5 men have experienced sexual violence victimization at some point in their lives.
Types of Sexual Assault
Sexual assault is not only rape; it is any unwanted sexual activity. Even if you have said “yes” to sex with the person before, or you are in a relationship with the person, no one has the right to have sex with you or pressure you into doing things you do not want to do. Any time you do not say “yes” to a sex act, it is sexual assault. Click here to learn more

Denim Day
Denim Day is a powerful international movement that takes place each April during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. It began as a response to a controversial court ruling that overturned a rape conviction, with the argument that the survivor’s jeans were “too tight” and must have required assistance to remove—implying consent. In protest, people around the world wear denim to challenge harmful myths about sexual violence and show their support for survivors.
Join us in honoring Denim Day by taking action locally! Support survivors in our community by shopping at the WEAVE Thrift, where denim will be on sale all April long. Your purchases directly fund services for survivors of sexual violence. You can also make a meaningful impact by donating to WEAVE to help provide services to survivors.
